Articles or e-books in .EXE format can only be run on a Windows-compatible computer.

Articles or e-books in .ZIP format are compressed files (so they can be downloaded quicker) and may or may not be readable on multiple types of operating systems. An "Un-ZIP" program like WinZip or IZARC (for Windows) or Stuffit (for Mac) is required to "un-compress" the file. I prefer IZARC because (a) it handles far more types of compressed files and (b) it's free.
